The Side Effects of Colon Cleansing

Colon Cleansing Side Effects

While Colon Cleansing is now a generally accepted alternative health practice, it must be noted that the act of cleansing your colon can actually cause a number of side effects.

Why Herbs Cause Side Effects

The herbs used in different colon cleansing programs are the main culprits of cleansing side effects. Many colon cleansing products use certain herbs because they possess properties for natural constipation relief. However, after the proper research was conducted, it was discovered that excessive use of specific herbs can actually cause more harm than good.

For example, excessive use of Senna or Cascara Sagrada can cause your bowel to become dependent on the herb. More specifically, this means that your bowels must have more and more of the herb, just to have a simple bowel movement.

Bowel Dependency is one of the most important colon cleansing side effects to be cautious of, however, there are many other side effects that consumers should be aware of prior to taking ANY colon cleansing product!

Possible Side Effects of Colon Cleansing:

  • Severe Cramps
  • Bloating
  • Nausea
  • Abdominal Pains
  • Electrolyte Imbalance
  • Bloody Diarrhea
  • Urine Discolorization
  • Liver Toxicity & other problems

How to Avoid Side Effects from Colon Cleansers

There are many ways to avoid the uncomfortable experience of cleansing side effects.

First and foremost, ALWAYS do the proper amount of research BEFORE buying or trying any colon cleansing product. If you are worried about the potentially dangerous effects of certain colon cleansing herbs, then it is best to avoid herbal colon cleansers altogether.

Second, make sure you have the proper diet while doing a colon cleansing program. Don’t binge on junk foods & sodas while cleansing. This is not going to help, in fact, it can cause the colon cleansing product to be ineffective, thus wasting your time and money. It is best to follow a healthy diet, consisting of lots of fruits & veggies, while taking a colon cleanser.

Third, it may be wise to look into taking a probiotic while cleansing. Probiotic’s assist colon cleansers by populating your bowels with beneficial bacteria. Research has shown that probiotics have shown alot of promise in easing symptoms of digestive disorders and certain food sensitivities, while enhancing the colon cleansing experience.

Of course, as always, it is wise to discuss the possible colon cleansing side effects with your doctor prior to taking any colon cleansing products.

I think the side effects are different depending on what kind of colon cleansing technique you use.

For example, the side effects for colon cleansing would differ if it was Colon Hydrotherapy vs. Herbal colon cleanser or oxygen colon cleanser. ya know?

I have tried all three, and I noticed that I felt that I experienced more side effects with the herbs in the herbal colon cleansers.. Not sure if there was any connection to the herbs and side effects, but I definitely felt worse, dragging.

This article about colon cleansing side effects is very interesting. I’ve been researching colon cleansing for a while and have never come across a list of colon cleansing side effects so clearly laid out. I’ve been wondering what the best colon cleanse product is, and it’s good to know a little more about what the side effects are to certain colon cleansing herbs. Thanks for the knowledge.

huh…. you always hear about colon cleansing products being a scam… but when you really look into WHAT is actually in the different colon cleansing products, you’ll know that ALL products have a different formulation, with ingredients that can cause all sorts of side effects.

It’s best to research any colon cleansing products PRIOR to buying any, just because some herbs work differently than others.

This is weird… I read that there aren’t any ‘REAL’ side effects from colon cleansing, except for the “die off effects”.

I was under the impressions other than your body processing and flushing out the toxins, and feeling the effect of that, there shouldn’t be any serious side effects from colon cleansing, unless you have an unusual allergy, or a serious health condition or disease that may already be causing problems. I know that some herbal colon cleansing products are known to cause side effects, just because of the wide variety of herbs in the products.

I have researched what I thought was a safe colon cleansing product for an entire year. Reading the testimonials until I was ready to purchase the product, only to find from other internet sites, this product didn’t have the FDA compliant statement listed on it’s seal. It’s so confusing out in cyberspace that depending on which site you visit, conflicting information can be given on any product. Several websites agree “Dual Action Cleanse” is not a good product, but another states it’s one of the best!. Not to mention doctors stating colon cleansing is harmful, yet people have died from colon related diseases. It’s also important to note prescription medications can be harmful to your health as well, but that doesn’t stop the doctors from prescribing them. With the way that health care is in this country, it’s no wonder people are looking for alternative medicines. From my experience, colon cleasing products that contain the ingredients, Bentonite Clay Senna, Cascara Sagrada, Psyllium, cannot be used for a long period of time without a harmful effect. Also, look for a product that includes a probiotic to replace good bacteria removed by the colon cleanse. The herbal cleanse didn’t work for me because of the senna and cascara or bentonite combinations and I underestimated the importance of a good probiotic. I will make sure the next product has: fiber, probiotic and is gentle on my system, the herbal cleanse over a period of 30 days was way too harsh. Finally read the labels, look for the FDA compliance statement and BBB to check for complaints.

Some of these side effects are cleansing reactions which occurs when you adopt a radical change of diet.

If you are on a well researched, gentel cleansing program, these side effects will naturally pass off in a day or two while the body adjusts to the new diet/herbs.

Everyone here seems to be looking at expensive products for their colon cleansing when in actual fact you can accomplish far better results when you go for a colon cleansing DIET or a managed FAST for 5-10 days.

You can easily accomplish this with foods from the grocery store. CHEAPER AND MUCH MORE BENEFICIAL!
